A few quick notes concerning Book 9 before we get to the lessons.
First, this book contains the first usage of the –s ending (plurality) in the series. Some children catch onto this concept quickly, and others need a bit of practice. Bob Books did something brilliant when they set up Book 9 using numbers. The numbers themselves speak of plurality, and any child–especially a five-year-old–will feel compelled by basic grammar knowledge gathered from life that there is one cup but two cups. So marrying the introduction of plurality to numbers gives the children an edge.
Now everyone go write the authors a thank-you card!
Second, I began practicing sight words a and A separately because my daughter had separated them in her mind. When she saw a, she read it as a word, but when she saw A beginning a sentence, she would sound it out as a short-a sound. So to clear this up I had her practice them both as sight words. Your students may not need to do this.
Lastly, I wrote a post about Book 9 (“10 Cut-Ups”) for parents of students who are learning to read without knowing their number symbols from 1 to 10, for those of you who need it.
