Did we introduce the exclamation point before? I really don’t remember. Daughter A. didn’t seem to know what it was, so I’m assuming we didn’t. Either way, this one is pretty simple: explain that it is sort of like a question mark. Do they remember how the question mark tells us that the sentence is a question? Well, the exclamation point tells us that the sentence is loud or emotionally charged. If you help them practice reading the sentence loudly and with feeling whenever they read exclamations, they will pick it up just fine.
