This is the “special” ch sound. I call it special because this is the ch sound that isn’t duplicated anywhere else — when these letters are together, they make their own special sound, which sounds a bit like tj.
There are three main ch sounds, you know. In words of Greek origin, the ch says |k|. In words of French origin, it says |sh|. Plus there are times when ch is silent. But today, it makes its own special sound.
