Well, that is one way to introduce what is necessary for reading words like kind, mind, etc. For this child, I actually changed it, and introduced it as a long-i sound. Same words as the chart I linked above, but only emphasizing the i instead of the entire ind blend. This is more in line with the actual phonics rule, which is why I made the change. You can do it either way, of course.
