Also in this section, I usually have a discussion with my students about the word said. They can read say, and they tend to wonder why said isn’t pronounced say-d. Well, the short answer is that it probably was at one time, but we are sloppy speakers. However, comma, they ought to read it as we say it, and not as it looks, if that makes sense. This is a good lesson in exceptions to rules — we are conforming to the state of things in our culture right now, while the spelling remains in the past.
